Y1/2 - Magnolia, Hawthorn & Juniper

Welcome to Key Stage 1 (Year 1 & 2)

Our Year 1/2 classrooms are dynamic, well-resourced, and structured learning spaces designed to nurture confident, curious, and independent learners. Sharing access to a large, vibrant outdoor area, children are able to explore, learn, and develop throughout the day. In our mixed-age environment, we teach to the child’s individual ability rather than their date of birth. By combining high academic expectations with flexible, research-backed learning strategies, we ensure every child is appropriately challenged, supported, and nurtured.

A Typical Day in Class

Our daily structure combines clear, predictable routines with rich, hands-on learning.

Our morning sessions focus on core academic skills through a blend of whole-class teaching, targeted small-group guided work, and focused independent practice. These sessions cover:

Phonics & Reading: Fluid, tailored groupings based on each child's precise reading stage.

Writing & Maths: Where shared whole-class concepts are followed by sharply targeted tasks, consolidation workbooks, and extension activities.

The afternoon sessions are dedicated to our foundation subjects (such as Science, History, Geography, Art, and Computing) taught via a two-year rolling programme, alongside provision-based and independent learning.

Enriched & Provision-Based Learning

Alongside whole class, group and individual activities, throughout the week, children have rich opportunities to:

Experiment with scientific concepts and engage with computing.

Express themselves through art, design, and model-making.

Experience the natural world and explore scenarios through imaginative role play.

Work with diverse materials, building independence and problem-solving skills.

Resources to support and extend your child’s reading, writing, and mathematical thinking are always readily available within the classroom environment. Across Key Stage 1, we focus on developing each child's self-reliance so that by the time they leave Year 2, their transition into Key Stage 2 is smooth, natural, and confident.

Our Curriculum

We have created half-termly curriculum overviews detailing the core knowledge and topics your child will be exploring. These guides are published every half-term and can be downloaded below.

Core Subjects (Phonics, Reading, Writing, Maths, Science)

Delivered using a Spiral Model, where fundamental concepts are continually revisited and deepened at an individually targeted developmental level.

Foundation Subjects:

Delivered on a Two-Year Rolling Programme (Cycle A & Cycle B). This guarantees that every child covers every National Curriculum milestone completely without missing or repeating topics.
