Our School's History
Our school is a Church of England School.
What does this mean?
The Church of England has always been concerned with education in many forms and the history of Church schools began when the National Society for the Promotion of Education was founded in 1811. There are 4700 Church of England Schools in the United Kingdom. All Church Schools are supported by their local Diocesan Board of Education. The Local Diocesan Board of Education for Send is the Guildford Diocese Board of Education. You can find out more information about the Guildford Diocese Board of Education by visiting their website https://www.cofeguildford.org.uk/education-schools/
There are many different types of Church Schools. Send Church of England (CofE) School is a Voluntary Aided (VA) School. Some key characteristics of a VA school are:
-
The Church or Foundation governors are an absolute majority.
-
Governors appoint and employ all staff.
-
Governors determine the RE syllabus which should reflect the Anglican tradition and worship reflects the Anglican tradition.

Both St Bede’s and Send CofE Infant School, which was built in 1958, operated as separate schools until 2012 when they became federated under the guidance of one headteacher and one governing body.
The Bush Lane school is no more after it was demolished following a decision to construct a new school building in the grounds of Send CofE Primary School.
The new building was officially opened in March 2017, with a number of dignitaries attending the special ceremony and youngsters performing songs and poetry readings.
Now the former St Bede’s site, which is owned by the Diocese, has been returned to a field.
